Mortal Kombat was only the fourth movie to be adapted from a video game, and critical and commercial consensus declared it the best by far. The genre of video game movies was still in its infancy in 1995, with the billion-dollar Super Mario Bros. The first of Mortal Kombat's movies tells the story of a group of human fighters from “Earthrealm” who travel to a dangerous martial arts tournament, where they must fight to protect Earth from an invasion from the warlike realm of Outworld. Following the massive success of the 1992 arcade fighting game of the same name, Hollywood quickly set about producing a film adaptation. 1995’s Mortal Kombatis fondly remembered as one of the better early video game movies, but rewatching the film in the modern day forces the viewer to confront some tough truths.
